A society evolving on exquisite good taste, liquor, drugs and lust can't really feel itself in the process of decay. Degeneration and pain are easily denied with anaesthetics at hand, and the leading citizens here are soon pickled in caricatures of their former selves. Like homunculi, they preserve a daily life based on short-term fulfillment -- until their leading man steps out of line by producing his finest play. He shows that hell has two sides: the one these people have fled and the one they have come home to. HOMUNCULUS is a dark comedy of expatriation and overdose in the hills of Central Mexico. Insatiable appetite drives these refugees from a world gone mad to a greater madness. Reaching for the old, lost spirit, they all fall down; some get up, brush themselves off and wonder what hit them. Some survive. Some move on.
ROBERT WINTNER lives and works on Puget Sound. HOMUNCULUS is his fifth novel. His previous book, THE PROPHET PASQUAL, is also available from The Permanent Press. Wintner is also known for his alter ego, Snorkel Bob, the largest snorkel equipment manufacturer and outfitter in the Hawaiian islands.
