A society evolving on exquisite good taste, liquor, drugs and lust can't really feel itself in the process of decay. Degeneration and pain are easily denied with anaesthetics at hand, and the leading citizens here are soon pickled in caricatures of their former selves. Like homunculi, they preserve a daily life based on short-term fulfillment -- until their leading man steps out of line by producing his finest play.
