What we publish:
We primarily publish literary fiction, and occasionally non-fiction. What we are looking for is something artfully written: the way the story is told is as important - if not more so - than the plot itself. We rarely do short stories unless they are from an author whose full-length work we've published before. We are generally disinterested in science, romance, futuristic, horror, fantasy, or children's fiction; nor do we publish poetry (though we have done two novels-in-verse).
Important guidelines:
NO ELECTRONIC SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. All submissions must be accompanied by an SASE (Self Addressed Stamped Envelope) if you want the material back and/or a response. It's best if you send the first 25 pages or so, and if we are interested we will ask to see the rest.
Where to send your submissions:
Attn: Judith Shepard
The Permanent Press
4170 Noyac Road
Sag Harbor, NY 11963
What happens next:
We read submissions in the order they are received, but since we get about 6,000 submissions per year and only publish 12 books a year, please be patient in waiting for a response. It can take up to several months . We do not log submissions or keep track of them, so don't ask for any "status" information: just trust that the post office has done its job and that your work has arrived successfully.
